TOUR: Cordillera Huayhuash Trek
The Cordillera Huayhuash is perhaps the most magnificent range of mountains in all the Peruvian Andes.From a distance the Huayhuash appears to be a single massive mountain-the 6634m(21,766ft)Yerupajá ,second highest in Peru and the highest oint of the vast Amazon watershed,surrounded by a number of lesser summits.Yet as one approaches the range it becomes apparent that there are more than a dozen serrated summits along a single ice-clad ridge,each with its own distint beauty .Upon reaching the heart of the range one discovers lakes,streams,forests,wildlife and flowers of the greatest delicacy.It is a wondrous region,from the grandest of scales to the most minute.Six peaks surpass 6000 meters(19.686ft),and another fifteen measures more than 5400 meters(17,717ft).The cirques and valleys at the base of the mountains are dotted with sparkling glacial lakes at altitudes between 4000 and 4500 meters.Many of these lakes are filled with trout and support abundant birdlife.Much of the terrain is rugged grassland or puna,but there are also native queñual forestharboring several threatened or near-threatened species of
